When grief turns into delusion and love becomes blind faith, 11 lives lost because mental health is still called 'pagalpan' in India. The Burari case isn't just a mystery; it's a mirror.

July 1, 2018. Delhi's Burari neighborhood woke up to India's most haunting tragedy. 11 members of the Chundawat family—three generations—found dead. 10 bodies hanging from the ceiling, blindfolded, hands tied. 77-year-old Narayani Devi on the floor. Among them: 15-year-old Shivam, 14-year-old Dhruv, and Maneka who was pursuing her Masters in Forensic Science.
This wasn't murder. This was something far more tragic.
🧠 THE REAL STORY:
After Bhopal Singh's death in 2007, youngest son Lalit claimed his father's spirit spoke through him. For 11 YEARS, he wrote instructions in 11 diaries—rituals, punishments, spiritual practices. The family believed him completely.
📋 WHAT INVESTIGATION FOUND:
✅ Shared Psychosis (Folie à Plusieurs) - when delusions spread through families
✅ Lalit suffered trauma from multiple accidents, lost his voice for years
✅ Doctors recommended psychotherapy in 2005—NEVER TAKEN
✅ 11 diaries detailed every ritual leading to that night
✅ Family appeared normal to everyone—shop running, kids in school
❌ WHAT THE SYSTEM FAILED TO DO:
🚫 Make mental health treatment accessible & affordable
🚫 Remove stigma: "Psychology matlab pagal"
🚫 Provide grief counseling after Bhopal Singh's death
🚫 Train communities to recognize mental health red flags
🚫 Create awareness about shared psychosis
🚫 Encourage neighbors to seek help (everyone saw "odd behavior")
🔴 THE QUESTIONS THAT HAUNT:
What if therapy wasn't seen as "weakness"?
What if grief counseling was normalized after deaths?
What if mental health check-ups were as common as physical ones?
What if neighbors felt empowered to intervene?
What if trauma treatment was accessible in 2005?
Their only "crime": Trusting a system that calls mental illness "pagalpan."
🕯️ 11 LIVES. 11 DIARIES. ZERO MENTAL HEALTH SUPPORT.
This isn't about blame. This is about CHANGE. About making mental health a priority, not a taboo. About recognizing that love without awareness can become dangerous.
