| Video Discription | The Harish Rana case is a recent and important judgment of the Supreme Court of India. Harish Rana was a young engineering student who suffered a severe accident in 2013. The accident caused brain damage, and he went into a permanent vegetative state. For more than 13 years, he remained completely dependent on medical support and was unable to recover or regain consciousness. His parents took care of him throughout this long period and spent a lot of time and money on his treatment. After many years, doctors confirmed that there was almost no chance of recovery. Because of his irreversible condition and the long suffering involved, his parents approached the Supreme Court asking permission to withdraw life-sustaining medical treatment. In March 2026, the Supreme Court allowed their request. The Court permitted doctors to withdraw life-support treatment for Harish Rana. This is called passive euthanasia, which means allowing a patient to die naturally by stopping medical treatment that only prolongs life without hope of recovery. The Court said that the right to live with dignity under Article 21 of the Constitution also includes the right to die with dignity in certain situations. The judges also stressed that strict medical procedures and expert opinions must be followed before taking such a decision. This judgment is important because it is one of the first real cases where the Supreme Court allowed passive euthanasia for a specific patient.
