In this episode of Losses and Lessons, we bring you the intense and heartbreaking story of Arvind Kumar Rao, an options trader who is currently under a massive debt burden of ₹60 lakhs due to repeated losses in the stock market, and his wife, Mrs. Sona Devi, who not only supported him emotionally but also left her own stable career to trade alongside him.
A huge part of his loss came from getting influenced by YouTubers who came LIVE offering tips. What makes their story even more alarming is that Arvind, after posting YouTube videos exposing questionable practices and individuals in the trading world, began receiving life threats from those he had spoken out against.
This added a layer of fear and stress to an already deteriorating mental and financial situation. Arvind wasn’t always in this place—he was once a respected teacher and ran a coaching institute with 80 to 85 students, earning well and living a comfortable life.
His wife, Sona, held an MSc in Mathematics and was working as a teacher in a CBSE-affiliated school, drawing a salary of ₹20,000 a month. They had a balanced and respectable life, deeply rooted in education and consistency.
But as the world of trading began to gain popularity and stories of financial independence through options began circulating, they too felt tempted by the promise of quicker, bigger returns.
It all looked easy and promising from the outside, but the inside story was a storm of losses and emotional breakdowns. He had no understanding of position sizing, risk management, or the actual mechanics of the instruments he was trading.
The capital they had saved started vanishing fast, and the trades kept going against them. Instead of stopping to evaluate, Arvind doubled down, convinced that one good profit would make up for all the previous losses.
Once the savings were gone, he began borrowing—first from banks, then from friends, and later from private lenders. Each new loan was taken with the hope that it would be the last, that the market would finally move in his favor. But that never happened.
The losses only grew, and so did the debt.
The mental pressure became unbearable. Arvind started experiencing suicidal thoughts, overwhelmed by shame, anxiety, and helplessness. His personal relationships began to strain. The peaceful home they once had turned into a space of constant financial worry.
Arvind’s and Sona’s story is a brutal but honest look at the darker side of retail trading, one that rarely gets shown in the highlight reels of profits and luxury. Their willingness to speak, even while still struggling with the consequences, is rare and deeply brave.
This episode is for anyone who's ever considered quitting their job to trade full-time, for those chasing profits through borrowed money, and for families who silently suffer in the background, watching their loved ones unravel under the weight of loss and shame.
Listen closely, because what happened to them could happen to anyone who enters the market without the right mindset and tools.
