| Video Discription | George Thedoropoulos, MD, FACS, FASCRS Professor of Surgery Athens Medical School Athens, Greece Carcinoma arising in pilonidal disease is arare occurence and its incidence is less than 0.1%. These tumors tend to be slow growing and present with ulceration, overgrowth and persistent seropurulent discharge from an incompletely treated, non-healed and with multiple recurrences neglected pilonidal sinus. Their main feature is the aggressive local invasion. Wide excision is the mainstay of their treatment. Healing of the remaining defect can be accomplished by secondary intention or primarily with the advancement of flaps from adjacent healthy fascio-cutaneous tissues (like in the depicted video). The presented case is the second pilonidal sinus cancer encountered in my practise and surgically treated by wide excision and V-Y flaps defect reconstruction at the Colorectal Unit of our Academic Department (First Department of Propaedeutic Surgery, Medical School, National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Athens, Greece). |
