| Video Discription | Neon inspired nude photo shoot – and tour of the National Gallery of Australia’s sculpture garden Michael Armstrong’s latest YouTube creation. My latest YouTube video gives you glimpse into another of my photographic process. I’ve been photographing my models for many years, but I rarely share these photos as artworks in their own right. I’ve decided to share some of my processes to see if I can help some of my fellow artists who also work with the figure. The project I’ve decided on for this shoot was neon lit themed look at the human form. I’ve had an idea for a while on how to build a rig for casting a variety coloured lights onto my subject. The rig needed to be versatile, light, strong and capable of being mounted vertically and horizontally. It needed to be to hold a variety coloured lights in a variety of adjustable positions. To top it all off it needed to be able to be packed away into as smaller space as possible. In this video I’ll briefly show you the lighting rig before sharing some of the photos from my most recent shoot. My trusty model for this shoot is Sarah, an Australian artist and my good friend. Check out her art and support her on Instagram at: https://www.instagram.com/sarah.king.artist/ During the time I filmed this video I visited the National Gallery of Australia, located in Canberra and wandered through the sculpture garden. I’ve included some of the footage I collected during this visit in the video and hope you enjoy the peak into Australia’s national art institution. I like to control my art making processes from start to finish. Although I will look at other artists work, reference photos and other sources of inspiration I don’t use these sources as reference material for the construction of my own artworks. Photos that I use as reference material generally disappear into my photo archive, I don’t like to make comparisons between the artwork and the source material. I want the artwork to exist in its own space, free from comparison. This is one of the main reasons why I source my own material so that way I can ensure total control over the vision. Shooting light is an exploration of the narrative impact I can have on my model’s performance through the addition of light and shadow. I’ve explored the use of projected images, cast shadows and inanimate silhouettes. Photo’s as artworks in their own right are very interesting to me. As I gain confidence in my photographic skills I’ll share more and more of these photos as artworks rather than hiding them away as reference material.
