| Video Discription | In this fourth, and final, video of the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office Mental Health – Suicide Awareness campaign we look at PTSD and residual effects law enforcement officers may have after going on case after tragic case. Again, Brandon Mateo’s suicide is just one of the nearly 7,000 total (all encompassing) cases that the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office took in 2020. The average person experiences a critical incident or traumatic event 2-3 times in their lifetime. Someone in law enforcement could experience 180 or more critical incidents in their career. Sheriff Darin Balaam is committed to bringing access to mental health care to all staff at the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office – commissioned and civilian employees. He secured funding for an in-house Staff Mental Health Counselor in April of 2021. Sheriff Balaam is grateful for Shannon Mateo’s bravery in sharing hers and Brandon’s story with the world.
