Video Discription |
This video discusses a particular form of moral particularism, as far as I understand it. You can look it up on Wikipedia or other internet sources. 🌐I claim that each situation has its own specificities. Recognising that reality then, context becomes important in each situation. If there is a culture which is "rotting", then, it seems to me you either have to fight it in some way, or get out of there!
The song I uploaded presents one perspective on comparing statements using parts of speech (see English grammar). From my experience and from conversations with others, it seems fairly straightforward to classify the following statements in order. 🎵📚
Sarah stole a sweetie from the shop at 3 years old 🍬
Sarah stole a new Mercedes at 30 years old 🚗
Sarah stole a famous person's foot 🦶
These statements are listed in order of increasing seriousness: most people I have spoken to consider 3 the most serious and 1 the least serious. ⚖️
Presumably, this is because stealing a sweet at age 3 likely means Sarah was unaware of right or wrong behavior. (please be aware that by right or wrong, I mean the concepts first and then their application for you). At age 30, stealing a new Mercedes involves taking a valuable and expensive object. Meanwhile, hypothetically stealing a famous person's foot would require harming the individual physically, making it obviously more serious and in line with today’s standards of ethical and moral treatment of human beings. ⚠️
I would also like to note that very few behaviors seem to have no emotional effect on others. From personal experience, not cleaning up the kitchen can provoke a negative reaction from those around me — although this does not mean I will steal their hypothetical feet (or even one hypothetical foot). 😅🍽️
In English, we can ask: how bad or good is a particular action within a given context? The answer often depends on the situation. For example, burping in the UK or France is literally just the expulsion of gas; some see it as a release of bodily tension. In the UK or France, burping may be seen as rude or abnormal due to its smell. However, in some North African countries, burping at the dinner table may be interpreted as a compliment to the host. If someone burps in private, when no one is around, it invokes the old philosophical question: does anything matter if a tree falls in the forest and no one hears it? 🌍🤔
We each have our own “shoulds”; however, the word “should” only makes sense within the context of a sentence. For instance, “You should not overuse AI” is meaningful only in a world where AI exists. 🤖
Variations of statements are used in different cultures. From my perspective, very normal behaviors exist among the general public in most parts of the world today. There is, for the most part, law and order — not chaos. Most people engage in everyday activities like reading and going to the cinema, rather than extreme behavior such as punching elderly women, or even elderly men, in the face. 📖🎬✋ |
