However, a fortunate turn of events occurred when he was 8 years old; he underwent surgery that slightly restored vision in his right eye. Shekhar started playing cricket at his school, inspired solely by his mother. His cricketing talent was recognized by the Cricket Association for the Blind in India in the year 2000 after a remarkable performance where he scored 136 runs off just 46 balls in a match. This achievement led to his selection for India's blind cricket team. Shekhar's cricketing career progressed significantly from there. In 2010, he became the captain of the Indian blind cricket team. Under his leadership, the team won the T20 World Cup in 2012 and the ODI World Cup in 2014, marking significant milestones in blind cricket history. In 2017, Shekhar Naik's contributions to the sport were nationally recognized when he was awarded the Padma Shri, becoming the first blind cricketer to receive this prestigious civilian honor in India. |
